‘Brutta figura’ in Italian culture is when someone makes a poor showing, appears in a bad light, or makes a fool of herself. The antithesis is bella figura, something which everyone hopes to attain and is essentially just keeping up appearances.

I painted the small figures using the space nearby as their individual paint palette, their creation and depiction is directly influenced by their immediate environment.
